“An Ordinary Day”

This image is of Marlene Henderson, a champion figure body builder from New Zealand. This portrait is part of my All Woman Project – a celebration and exploration of the 21st century NZ woman. In the essence of one aspect of my project’s theme – the many roles that women fulfil and juggle – I wanted to show Marlene’s opposing sides: the beautiful and strong woman who is an achiever in her chosen field juxtaposed against that of her family life where she’s just “Marlene” or “Mum” on any ordinary day.

I have been working on my self-funded All Woman Project for the past 2.5 years. I have photographed, and collected the stories of 50 NZ women including wrestlers, nuns, a boxer, a burlesque performer and the first NZ woman to ski to the South Pole. It’s now complete and I would like to have a touring exhibition and to publish a large format art book. I hope this will raise my profile as a photographer and I will increase my paid assignments doing a similar style of portraiture. I would also love to get my teeth into another project but to have some initial funding this time!
